Washington County has Drug and Alcohol Detox Beds!
WASHINGTON COUNTY, Ohio –
Did you know that Washington County has drug and alcohol detoxification services? Substance use detoxification (detox) is the process of removing foreign substances (toxins) from the body that are caused by alcohol or drug use. It generally takes 5-7 days to detox from drugs or alcohol, depending on the substance, dosage, and severity of the addiction.
Everyone experiences withdrawal differently, but symptoms may include anxiety, insomnia, nausea/vomiting, mood swings, sweating, shaking, cravings, and difficulty concentrating. Some people are under the impression that withdrawal from alcohol isn’t as dangerous as withdrawing from other drugs, however, detox from alcohol or any drug may be dangerous. Detoxing poses risk of heart attack/failure, hallucinations, paranoia, increased body temperature, infection, seizures, severe dehydration, and even death, so 24-hour supervision provided by clinical staff can be very beneficial.
Medically managed detoxification services include clinical evaluation and monitoring, stabilization and care to minimize withdrawal symptoms, and preparation for entry into other forms of treatment, such as residential or intensive outpatient services. Medications may be used to reduce the effects of detox symptoms and increase comfort during the detoxification process.
Unless you are experiencing life threatening symptoms or an overdose, you do not have to go through the emergency department to access detox services. You can self-refer, or family and friends can encourage loved ones struggling with addiction to receive treatment without leaving Washington County. If you or a loved one does end up needing emergency care, ask for peer recovery services for support in next steps to finding appropriate treatment.
